The Chateau was built in 1890 by a group of Adelaide businessmen who sought to capitalize on the shortfall of grapes from European Vineyards due to the impact of the phylloxera. 560 of Barossa’s top growers were contracted by the company for a 10 year period, ensuring a steady stream of grapes and wine for the European market.
