Sans ROGER FRASER and his partner Jill planted 12 acres of Pinot Noir and Syrah at Martinborough in 1986. After 20 odd vintages, one would think that Roger would be satisfied with the quality of his wines, having won numerous trophies and gold medals over the last 10 years, however, the relentless pursuit of perfection continues, particularly with its Pinot Noir. The vineyards are run on organic farming principles. Cropping levels are kept low in order to ensure maximum flavour profile with up to eight different clones of Pinot Noir planted. Recently we tasted all three Pinot Noir wines which the company produces and must say they were all impressive. Comparisons with Ata Rangi and Martinborough Vineyards are inevitable since Murdoch James Fraser vineyard is next door to Ata Rangi & about 500 metres from Martinborough Vineyard. The Murdoch James wines are powerful, however, at the time of tasting Ata Rangi had more of the Pinot Noir power wave and a slightly longer aftertaste. Having said that, the dominant quality of Murdoch James is the concentration of pure fruit flavour. One thing is for certain, you won’t by disappointed by any of the examples of top New Zealand Pinot Noir.
