Sans The Ambervale vineyard with its south east exposure, red loam soils over deep gravelly clay and fractured rock combine with mature vines to produce grapes of the highest quality. Plantings are to Grenache, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon �all dry grown. Initially planted in the mid-1800s, today their vines date from 1968. Viticulturalist and GM Nick Radford runs the vineyards and the business, with Craig Isbel, ex-Izway and Torbreck, in charge of winemaking. All fruit is hand picked, de-stemmed, open-ferments, gentle extraction and basket pressed prior to aging in French oak.Dense midnight black heart with a deep dark red black tinged hue. Potent ripe blackberry, liquorice and dark chocolate aromas waft through the olfactory senses trailed by some dark plum, vanillin oak, earthy mocha and faint leather notes. Rich, densely concentrated and voluminous the full bodied palate is layered with a thick coating of plush blackberry, dark plum, liquorice and dark chocolate fruit. Vanillin oak, earthy mocha and spice elements ensue. Opulently textured and incredibly powerful it has a sturdy yet velvety tannin structure. Concludes exceptionally long and sumptuous.Drink over the next 6-8 years.Alc. 15%
