The Black Canvas, Escaroth Chardonnay, Marlborough is the first vintage of a single vineyard – now exclusively replanted to Dijon clone 95. Made with 30 percent new oak, it is rich and expressive in style lined with a touch of butter. Lees stirring gives additional complexity and adds a savoury note. All this is cut by a refreshing lemony and lemon rind type of acidity. Toasty on the palate it has a mineral, oyster shell finish. The wine is still on the young side, but decanted it is excellent with food. A Burgundian counterpart for sure, which represents good value for the quality of viticulture.
