In 1605, Marshal d’Estrées gave the Carthusians of the Chartreuse de Vauvert in Paris a manuscript for an “elixir of long life” made from 130 medicinal and aromatic plants. This Elixir, developed by Brother Jérôme Maubec in 1737, took the name Elixir Végétal de la Grande Chartreuse. Today, in their distillery in Voiron (Isère), the Carthusians continue to produce this Elixir, whose secret they have jealously guarded for four centuries. The virtues of the Elixir Végétal de la Grande Chartreuse lie primarily in the use of natural plants, sugar and honey, to the exclusion of any artificial products.
