First Growth Château Climens is regarded as one of Barsac’s top estates, appealing to Sauternes lovers with its distinctive poise and expressive fruit flavours. Only five families have owned this Barsac estate since vineyards were planted there in the 1700s, testament to its privileged position within the appellation. Its 29 hectares of vineyards, which benefit from excellent natural drainage, lie on typical limestone outcrops and sit at the highest point. Unusually, the vines are 100% Semillon, the variety thriving on the unique Climens red soils, mixed with gravel, clay and iron-rich sand. The estate has been in the Lurton family since 1971 and in 1992 Bernice Lurton took over from her father, Lucien, at just 22 years old. Since her inauguration, Climens has gone from strength to strength.
