Full tasting note and winemaking /h2>
Dagaz El Caminohas a nice ruby red colour. On the nose it has a lot of fruit intensity such as raspberries and cherries, mixed with light notes of cedar and spices from its aging. In the mouth it is soft but with a good tannic structure. Elegant and complex with good persistence.
Bunches were selected, followed by a cold soaking of 4 days at 8°C. Then fermentation for three weeks and maceration for 10 days. Aging for 10 months in used French oak barrels to impart subtle aromas and flavours of oak that serve to complement the fruit character of the wine and the expression of the terroir from which it comes
The producer /h2>
Viña Dagaz (Dagaz is a Celtic rune that means ‘the beginning of a new pathâ€? was founded in 2015 by renowned winemaker Marco Puyo and Patricio Gomez-Barris. After many years exploring the different areas of Colchagua whilst working on behalf of other wineries Marco felt that the temperate Mediterranean climate and granitic soils of Pumanque offered a unique opportunity to create something more personal. Drawing inspiration from the granitic soils of the Côtes du Rhone, Galicia and Rioja, he wanted to create something that authentically represented the terroir. Dagaz produce high quality wines showing elegant mineral characteristics, good acidity and great structure.
Marco Puyo trained as a winemaker in Santiago and cut his teeth at the Rothschild-owned Los Vascos estate in Colchagua. Whilst at San Pedro he founded his personal project in Pumanque in 2005, planting approximately 40 hectares to Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Carmenere and Syrah.
The Pumanque vineyard is located 155 km south-west of Santiago and 34 km from the Pacific coastline. Planted on gentle granitic slopes, the climate is Mediterranean with a distinct oceanic influence and cool evenings. Marco started making small personal quantities from one or two barrels in 2009, and then officially created Dagaz with business partner Patricio Gómez-Barris in 2015.
It has been a lifetime ambition for Marco to have his own project and be his own boss. Since leaving San Pedro in 2018 he has been focussed full-time on Dagaz. The wines are quite extraordinary and are not entirely what you might expect from Colchagua. This is a warm region that tends to produce wines that are plush, sleek and opulent. Stylish wines that are true to their origin, in much the same way as wines of the Barossa Valley in Australia area. Yet at Dagaz I find something extra â€?a finesse and elegance that stands out. For me it is a combination of both vineyard work and Marco’s magic in the winery that allows this.
