A pretty, flavourful red Burgundy from Mercurey, and a really good demonstration of why this vineyard appellation is in fashion right now, as Burgundy lovers look beyond the traditional areas of the Cote d’Or. Juicy, red-fruited and delicious, with versatility for food matching too.

TASTING NOTE: This is a youthful red Burgundy with a lovely pale cherry red colour. It is unfiltered so the colour is opaque. On the nose: it is very pretty and aromatic with typical red fruits of black cherry, currants, raspberry and fruit compote, with a barely noticeable hint of spice from ageing in large oak barrels. On the palate: it is medium-bodied, fruity with succulent black and red berry flavours. It is elegant in texture from supple tannins gently supporting the wine, and a great example of Mercurey. 13.5% alcohol.

FOOD PAIRING, STORING AND SERVICE: This red Burgundy is very versatile, pairing a simple meal as well as a smarter dinner. Match with white or red meats, grilled dishes, and cheeses. The earthier, gamier character of Pinot Noir will develop over time (if you are patient enough to store it!) which is great to match slow-cooked red meats and or a smelly cheese board! Enjoy it now, or let it rest for 3-4 years to develop tertiary earthy notes. Serve at 17°C.

ABOUT: Domaine du Meix Foulot lies just below the ruins of Château de Montaigu, in Mercurey, in the Cote Chalonnaise area of Burgundy. The 20-hectare estate is owned and run by Agnes Dewe de Launay, and has been in her family for over 200 years (and her great-great-grandfather helped establish the Mercurey appellation in 1923). They have pioneered sustainable practices long before being adopted elsewhere, particularly in terms of preserving biodiversity in the vineyard, water conservation and the use of alternative pest control and disease prevention methods.
