96 points VinousThis 1959 Maury may ultimately turn out to be Philippe Gayral’s greatest find. It comes from the oldest parcels of Grenache Noir and Carignan and spent 40 years in wooden foudres. It has a lucid amber hue. The bouquet is utterly sublime: red plum, Hoisin, mulberry, burnt toffee, stewed Clementines and just a hint of VA giving it life. Wonderful! The palate is beautifully balanced with disarming fine, almost filigree tannins. Stewed red fruit, fig jam, tayberry, Moroccan spices and quince suffuse this Maury that has outstanding length and delineation. The 300 bottles produced are due to be released later this year.
