Intro to Greywacke Pinot Gris /h2>

Greywacke Pinot Gris from Marlborough New Zealand has notes of peaches, golden apricots and nectarines, a wine with rich, ripe aromas balanced by a floral purity. The palate is luscious, reminiscent of homemade apple pie with rich pastry and a faint hint of cinnamon.

Full tasting note and wine making /h2>

Greywacke Pinot Gris from Marlborough has a mix of pears, red apples and quince aromas with hints of honeysuckle and cardamom spice. The palate has succulent ripeness and herbal savouriness giving the wine an intriguing array of flavours in a full supple, concentrated just off-dry style.Much of the fruit is from the Brancott Valley with alluvial soils containing high proportions of greywacke river stones. A warm, dry spring and near perfect conditions during flowering resulted in one of the earliest, and potentially largest harvests on record.Fruit was hand-picked separately and then racked to fermentation vessels. About half of the juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks and the balance was filled into old French oak barriques. All the wine was transferred to stainless steel tanks where the fermentations were stopped, retaining 8 g/l residual sugar. The blended wine was then filled into old barrels remaining on yeast lees for a further six months, prior to bottling in October.

The producer /h2>

Greywacke was created in 2009 by Kevin Judd, chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay from its inception for 25 years and instrumental in the international recognition which Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc enjoys now. The name ‘Greywackeâ€?was adopted by Kevin for his first Marlborough vineyard located in Rapaura in recognition of the high prevalence of rounded greywacke river stones in the soils of the vineyard, a sedimentary rock which is widely found in Marlborough. Kevin Judd is also New Zealand’s finest wine photographer and has recently published a book ‘The Landscape of New Zealand Wineâ€?
