Sans The second core expression within The Hearach single malt range was launched one year after thedistillery’s inaugural single malt(2023). It’s the same lightly peated make (12-15 ppm), now matured infirst-fill Oloroso casks, whereas the inaugural release was a mix of bourbon, Oloroso and Fino casks. The label states “Olorosoâ€?rather than “Oloroso Sherryâ€?which has had some commentators questioning whether the casks were simply x-Oloroso wine, or actually held sherry from Jerez. That question has been clarified by the distillery’s press release which states the whisky was matured in casks hand-picked for quality from the respected Bodega José y Miguel Martín. The nose has a grassy, nutty oloroso, dry cocoa character, juxtaposed nicely against a soft drift of earthy peat smoke. Medium dry, the entry is grassy then enriched by light sherry, suggestions of ripe plums, hints of citrus peel, nut-infused bitter chocolate and dried herbs,the malt more salient at mid palate, the smoke in retreat until the fade. Elegant, with a drier styled oloroso influence, this also tastes older than you’d expect.46% Alc./Vol.
