A complex and balanced Rye IPA from Donegal

Rustbucket is a beautifully balanced rye ale that pours a hazy amber and hits you with a fresh mix of lemongrass, pine, and peppery rye on the nose. The taste starts bright and citrusy before shifting into a spicier, earthier character thanks to the local malted rye and a blend of EU and New Zealand hops. It feels substantial and medium-bodied without being heavy, hiding its 5.1% ABV behind a crisp, clean mouthfeel. What makes it stand out is that evolving hop character – it transitions from fresh fruit to a lasting, spicy bitterness that keeps every sip interesting.

STORY BEHIND THE LABEL

Deeply rooted in the hilly fields and farms of northeast Donegal, Kinnegar blends tradition with a very practical, hands-on approach to brewing. By running a large-scale 35HL kit alongside their original smaller brewhouse, they manage to balance consistent production with the freedom to experiment on new, quirky recipes. They stick to time-honored methods like “spunding,” where the yeast naturally carbonates the beer during fermentation, and they choose never to filter or pasteurise the final product to keep the flavours as honest as possible. The team is also entirely self-sufficient on-site, handling everything from their iconic 500ml bottles and 440ml cans to the kegs sent out to local pubs and export markets. It is a proper farmhouse operation that has grown up without losing its sense of place or its commitment to doing things the right way.
