Assyrtiko is arguably Greece’s most iconic wine grape variety, and whilst it is most well-known on the island of Santorini, here is a wonderful example from Northwestern Greece. The vineyard lies at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level within the viticultural zone of Agios Panteleimon, in the Amyndeon Appellation. Despite the cold winters and warm summers here, the four neighbouring lakes contribute to the creation of a mild continental climate that makes this the perfect spot for these vines. The soil here is also sandy and poor, which sounds like a bad thing â€?but it is actually perfect for the production of quality wines! The vines have to work harder and put more energy into producing better grapes, resulting in exquisite wines with rich aromas.
