Few winemakers in Napa can approximate the intimate connection to the land which John Kongsgaard and son, Alex, possess. Fifth and sixth generation Napans respectively, their winery â€?founded by John in the 1990s â€?has become arguably America’s greatest producer of Chardonnay. Kongsgaard’s flagship wine, The Judge Chardonnay, is made exclusively from fruit grown in the original 6-acre vineyard, with some vines dating back to the 1970s. This gnarly old vineyard miraculously produces, year after year, a truly unique wine of real “grand cruâ€?stature.
