El Ciruelo is one of the greatest volcanic wines in the world. This wine is a blend of Listán Negro as the main variety and a small percentage of Listán Blanco. Listán Negro is a native variety that is found only on the Canary Islands. However, Listán Blanco is the name that was given to it on the islands. Usually it is called Palomino, a very common variety in Jerez (Sherry). The grapes come from a small plot of 0.75 hectares of old vines that are over 90 years old at an altitude of 500 metres on a soil of volcanic rock under a cover of native vegetation. The plot, El Ciruelo, takes its name from the trees planted in the vineyards, which are plums. The nose is delicate, revealing very aromatic floral, peony and liquorice notes, mixed with beautiful aromas of fresh red fruit and spices. On the palate, the wine is correct, with good minerality. The texture is dense but correct, with soft but very present tannins. The finish is persistent, revealing beautiful bitter tastes. The length is endless and has rare balance. Only a few lucky ones can afford one of the 4000 bottles produced every year.
