Latour Maranges has aromas of red berries and black fruits and a well balanced palate full of blackcurrant notes.
Les Maranges which includes the villages of Cheilly, Dezize and Sampigny, was granted its own appellation in 1988. It covers 163ha of red, 7.7ha of white and 82ha are Premier Cru land. The vineyards are planted on well-exposed south-east facing slopes at 240-400 metres in the southernmost tip of the Cote de Beaune. Soils are reminiscent of those further up the Cote dOr escarpment, containing a relatively high level of limestone and clay. Maranges has an excellent capacity for ageing with fine structure and intensity of Pinot Noir fruit character. The grapes were destemmed prior to fermentation in open vats followed by 12 months aging in stainless steel tanks.

The Latour family have long been established in Burgundy’s wine trade. They began as vine growers in the village of Aloxe-Corton as early as 1768 and went on to establish today’s business, Maison Louis Latour, in 1797. Today they are one of the region’s most famous names creating wines from their own 50 hectare domaine in the Côte d’Or and from grapes and wines purchased through the negociant arm of the business. The company has been in family ownership for 11 generations and is now led by the 7th Louis Latour. He is ably supported by Chief winemaker Jean Charles Thomas, and Denis Fetzmann and Boris Champy who run the Domaine.Back in the 19th Century barrels were not only used as they are today, to age and ferment wine, but they were also the only way in which to ship wine. Bottles were usually too fragile and their weight increased transportation costs excessively. Barrel making has been a time honoured tradition at Maison Louis Latour for more than half a century. It continues today with over 2000 barrels being made each year, half of which are exported to other wineries worldwide. The oak originates from the Alliers and Vosges forests of Northern France and ages outside for 30 months before being used to make a barrel. Barrels are made by craftsmen with staves being placed together and carefully shaped, by hand, info a barrel form before being toasted over an open fire. Chestnut hoops are traditionally placed around the barrel to protect it.
Maison Louis Latour owns almost fifty hectares of grand cru, premier cru and communal vineyards in Aloxe-Corton, Gevrey-Chambertin, Puligny-Montrachet, Vosne Romanée, Pernand-Vergelesses, Savigny-lès-Beaune, Pommard, Volnay and Beaune. Their Domaine represents the largest single holding of Grand Cru vineyards in the Côte d’Or.
Maison Louis Latour’s Domaine wines are produced at Château Corton Grancey in the village of Aloxe-Corton using traditional techniques and almost entirely made by hand. The Domaine is managed by Christophe Deola.
Louis Latour’s other wines are made at the Clos Chameroy on the outskirts of Beaune under the watchful eye of Jean Charles Thomas. Here in their state of the art winery vinification takes place; blending centuries of tradition with beneficial modern innovations. During the harvest Louis Latour’s third winery in Pommard handles the red grapes from the Côte de Beaune vineyards.
