Nantou Distillery’s Omar (stylised OMAR) single malts come from a long-standing Taiwanese winery turned craft distillery: the Nantou winery operation dates back to the late 1970s, and the distillery began producing single-malt spirit under the OMAR name in the late 2000s, blending traditional Scotch-style production with Taiwan’s tropical terroir and winemaking experience. This particular release is a cask-strength expression finished in orange-brandy barrels, a deliberately unusual finishing choice that layers concentrated citrus and brandy-liqueur character onto the distillery’s malt base and is presented as part of OMAR’s “cask strength/liqueur finishâ€?series. Bottled at around mid-50s ABV and released in limited runs (several thousand bottles in the 2021/2022 releases), they are non chill-filtered, with natural colour. Expect a pronounced orange/mandarin brightness and an almost orange-syrup or marmalade sweetness underpinned by vanilla, biscuit malt, light baking spices and a touch of hazelnut or clay-like earth; the finish brings lingering candied citrus and syrupy brandy warmth.
