From the vineyard of Hans Erich Dausch (better known simply as “HE”), in the Pfalz region of Germany, the 2015 HE Weine Pinot Noir delivers a fine example of what this boutique house does so well. With vines planted on steep slopes at 200-230 m altitude and careful selection of fruit from old-vines, this wine reflects both place and craft. It’s crafted for elegance, not brute power.

In the glass it shows a deep, luminous ruby with subtle garnet glints at the rim. On the nose you’ll discover raspberry, cherry and wild strawberry, layered with a perfume of violet, fine spice and a hint of undergrowth. These aromas lead into finer tertiary notes just beginning to show — gentle cedar, a touch of forest floor — suggesting that the wine is entering a lovely phase of maturity.

The palate is beautifully composed: the fruit is lively yet refined, tannins are firm but polished, and the acidity gives a vibrant spine. Red-berry purity, pomegranate and cherry skins combine with subtle oak nuance (barrel-ageing in French barriques) to deliver texture and depth. The finish is long, whispering of dried red fruit, soft spice and a mineral thread that nods back to the terroir.
