Chile might be known to some wine lovers as a rich and fertile land that often produces good, intense wines, though lacking that elusive element that will see them matching old world wines. Louis-Antoine Luyt, who was “educated” in Domaine Lapierre in Beaujolais, is successfully adding the missing link. Located in the Maule Valley, Chile’s largest and most diverse winemaking regions, he produces this red wine made from 100% El Pais grape variety from 220! year-old vines. Pipeno wines are elaborated in the Chilean most traditional way where harvests are trampled and removed from their clusters manually over a “zaranda” sieve and then vinification in a “lagar” (opened tank).The juice is then kept in “pipas”, hence the name of Pipeño.The wine is made solely from the juice of this maceration.
