Tasting Note

A stunning example of the Jean (also known as Mencia) grape. This has a savoury spice one the nose with a light liquorice note and intense red berry and black cherry fruit. On the palate it is very powerful with cherry and blackberry fruit, herbaceous hints and elegant tannins on a long finish supported by fresh acidity. There’s lots to enjoy in this now, but it’s structure gives this ageing potential for 5-6 years.

Maias is the local name for the Weaver’s Broom plant which surrounds the estate here (its yellow flowers blossom in May in this part of Dao, hence its nickname – Maio is the word for May).

In the foothills of the Serra de Estrela (Star Mountain), Quinta das Maias was first established in 1893. It is now a registered organic estate, capturing the freshness and focus that this vineyard offers. A haven for the Jaen variety, known in Spain as Tinta Mencia in Bierzo, Maias is a unique terroir.
