To the south of the LÖHRER BERG lies the KÖNIGSSCHILDS vineyard on limestone soils. The vineyard’s name probably comes from its former ownership of the Imperial Palace of Ingelheim, Charlemagne’s winter residence. Here, the old Riesling vines grow up to 15 metres deep in the ground, and display a bouquet of floral scents and a shy nature, especially in their youth. The Riesling Königsschild 2023 opens with a pure, intense yet subtle floral/stony bouquet, with hints of crushed stone and ripe lemons. Precise and lush on the palate, this is an elegant, refined and linear dry Riesling, tight, fine-meshed and saline, persisting with crisp phenols on the stimulating, bitter finish.
