Sans Robert Napier, for whom this whisky is named, led quite the life as a Marine Engineer. He set up his own business in 1815 and the quality of his steam engines soon put him in high demand. He expanded his business in 1841 to include an iron shipbuilding yard in Govan (across the river from the Clydeside). Several of Scotland’s most esteemed shipbuilders apprenticed under him and he was made the primary engine builder for the Admiralty after he proved that his engines were cheaper and more reliable than those built on the Thames in London. Clydeside have adopted Napier’s mantra of “quality, quality, quality.â€?That focus on quality includes longer fermentation times â€?72 hours, compared with the 48 hours that are standard at larger distilleries, plus slower distillations. “We’ve instilled that into everyone in the production team, and everyone’s bought into it â€?there’s no rushing the distillation so they can knock-off early on a Friday,â€?/em> says Master Distiller, Alistair McDonald.
